Vince Neil established Network Restoration Services over 16 years ago in Newcastle and over the last 12 years has successfully completed both Australian and overseas studies in mould remediation. We initially became involved after discovering that our fire decontaminations were often resulting in our clients being able to better manage their allergies. These decontamination efforts were also removing mould based triggers which produced reactions in a percentage of our clients.
Further studies showed us that most of whom were practicing modern medicine and naturapathy didn't have a holistic approach to their clients health. Drugs and added vitamins are extremely important but shouldn't the affects of your individual environment be taken into account?
There are enough documented cases to show links between poor health and the enviroment in which we work and sleep. This is where we find it exciting: To take a house or workplace which has problems from fungal contamination, decontaminate, provide testing facilities to ensure the results are positive and then through our client relationships monitor what health changes may have been achieved.
A positive improvement in your health after we have
completed a remediation, thats what its all about.
Cheers and good health
YOUR FAMILIES HEALTH IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
Homes and buildings which are not correctly dried and remediated after being affected by water can easily cause health problems for the occupants.
In June 2007 a United States study concluded that over 20% of Asthma cases may be attributable to dampness and mould in domestic dwellings. Schools and places of work were also proven to have been problem areas.
Dampness and exposure to mould can increase respiratory problems by 30-50% and has also been linked to depression.
To ensure health is not issue make sure your dwellings and workplace buildings are dried quickly and professionally.
Network Restoration Services have a mould decontamination team which works throughout NSW and offers consultancy advice in other states across Australia.
NEWCASTLE FLOODS
In Newcastle's disasterous floods of 2007, numerous buildings where allowed to air dry with mould building up between the skirting boards and wall plaster. Many restoration efforts only included surface cleaning and repainting which was effectively only hiding the mould.
This could result in many homes and workplace buildings becoming the cause of a number of health issues.
Where does the liability fall? - Will the insurance company accept it or will the building company be made accountable or the assessing firm who provided the scope of works? Should all of these houses have been tested to ensure clearance results were achieved? I know if I was buying house in an area that was affected, I would request a copy of their Clearance Test.
Lack of a clearance test could hamper the sale and price of a property.
VARIOUS FUNGAL SPECIES
The various fungal species found in the indoor environment where there are damp conditions, ongoing water leakages or where flooding has occurred and the building has not been dried correctly (some insurance companies only dry out carpets and not the walls, flooring, cupboards, under the house etc.) can be classified into 3 groups.
Allergenic - not generally dangerous to humans in low amounts but they can cause allergic reactions or asthmatic systems in some people. In some cases, as with Aspergillus, our immune systems may be too weak to destroy the spores before they can do any harm.

Human lung tissue embedded with Aspergillus
Mycotoxic moulds may cause serious health affects in humans. Short term irritations may be experienced by people with Immuno Suppressive issues. There have also been some links to cancer but at this stage there is no data to support these claims.
Pathogenic moulds may cause serious health concerns for those with immuno suppressive systems, those undergoing chemotherapy and also persons with HIV/Aids.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR HOUSE OR BUILDING HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY WATER?
1. Ensure the building structure is safe.
2. Contact an emergency water damage mitigation company to extract carpets, treat with biocides, remove underlay (if necessary), test moisture levels throughout and install the necessary drying equipment.
3. Should moisture levels be high in walls, the skirting boards and other materials may need to be removed immediately (especially where MDF timbers have been used).
4. Drying equipment will need to be installed for damp areas under kitchen cupboards and other sealed areas. It is vital that all such areas are dryed properly.
The quicker you dry your building the less chance there is of it being contaminated.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PROPERTY HAS BEEN WET FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME?
The area should be inspected to determine if any visual mould has formed. If so you will need to utilize a company which will decontaminate before drying down, otherwise you may cross contaminate other areas which had not been affected.
At this point you may also need to remove any affected cellulosic materials which have either been wet directly from the water or through wicking and/or equilbrilizing from the high humidity from within the structure.
